Novel Journal Entry

“The lock was broken. She was in there…this girl…She was crouched on the seat, smoking heroin…” (Page 141)

This quote stands out because someone in my family experiments with drugs. When she uses the drug heroin, it changes her whole attitude toward everyone and everything. Her kids have been taken away from her and she has lost almost everything. Since she’s on drugs she really has no pain or sympathy for her kids and our whole family. My life has defiantly changed since I found out about her doing drugs. I have lost a lot of respect for a lot of different things and I look at how people raise there kids a lot closer now. Ever since the drugs have been apart of her life I do thank her for what she has done, it helped me find my own career path. I now want to become a social worker to help kids and other families who have been affected by drugs. Candy reminds me a lot of my family member. They both have had addictions to drugs and they both have struggled with finding money and getting drugs. In the book Candy prostitutes and gets her drugs from her pimp, all though my family member has never dealt with that issue there stories are still quite similar. Both of them have met a guy who’s trying to help them leave their past behind. Joe found Candy and she found her boyfriend. In the book Joe saved Candy from Iggy, her life of prostitution and is trying to help her stay off drugs. My family member has been helped by her boyfriend in trying to sustain her normal life again. I believe everything happens for a reason, Joe met Candy, and from this my family will become stronger.

Assignment # 3: The Perils of Indifference

1. Perils of Indifference by Elie Wiesel means to be in danger with an unconcern opinion.

2. In the story "The Lottery" the public stoning is accepted by the members of the town because everyone does it and they don't want to be the only one not participating. Even in everyday life people won’t step in and do the right thing because there intimidated by all the other people participating. If someone is bullying another kid at school most people feel intimidated by the kids bullying and won’t help the person being bothered.

3. The two stories "The Lottery" and "The Perils of Indifference" have a lot of similarities how people fall for peer pressure instead of doing there own thing. People feel they can’t stand up for the right thing, when people doing the wrong or bad thing will just put them down. In the public stoning in The Lottery the towns people didn’t stand up and say no but participated because everyone else was. Most people don’t want to feel singled out in a crowd so they go against there better judgments and participate. Also people don't want to break tradition, and by not helping in the public stoning they would have been looked upon as not helping the town get a good harvest. No one wants to make a situation worse and by doing what everyone else does it seems like your doing the right thing when your not.

Cliches

All is fair in love and war. 

The moment happened and I locked eyes with her across the room. Her glistening hair soaked up the sun. Maybe this time I would be unlucky in cards, and lucky in love. Usually to me love is blind. But she was hotter then hell. She had me under a spell. She was the apple to my eye; she could charm the birds out of trees. Her natural beauty took my breath away. Those plump pink lips were as juicy as a watermelon. Her bright brown eyes caught mine. This is love I thought. One day I feel like we could get married. I hope she doesn’t get cold feet.
 

Superpower

If I could have any superpower in the world I would choose to fly. Flying would be the most convenient superpower out there. Being able to fly would never make me late and I could also visit cool places around the world fast. I would also be saving the environment, since I'm not driving and I would not be burning a hole in the ozone layer. I would also be able to spend more time with family and friends that don't live near me. The only downside to being able to fly would be my arms would get sore. There would be some cool factors to flying though too, you would get the attention of lots of people and I could preform in the sky for money. Also I would wear a cool cape while flying, people from below would always see me with my bright orange cape with my name on it. I think being able to fly would also make people happy, seeing the excitement on peoples faces would be cool. This would also help me show up to things on time or even earlier then expected. Being on time is not something I'm good at and being able to fly directly there would be so efficient.
